Elliott Cole Update: Eton 1/2 Distance Triathlon

Well sun cream was the order of the day at the Eton 1/2 distance triathlon on Saturday 22nd May at the Olympic rowing centre Dorney Lake in Eton.

With a slightly later race start than usual (11.20am) the temperature was reaching the mid 20’s before the gun went off to let the under 30’s Age Group into the water.

The format for the race was a 750m Swim consisting of a 1 lap swim in the clear waters of the Dorney Lake Olympic rowing centre followed by a 20km Bike course taking in 4 complete laps of the lake finished off by a 5km Run following 2 laps along the side of the lake.

The gun went off at 11.20am to let the 93 Under 30’s age group athletes out onto the 750m swim course.

Battling the final stages of the chest infection I’ve had I knew the race was going to be a tough one, especially given the heat but reaching the first turn around buoy of the swim I was feeling good and holding on to the tail end of the lead pack of swimmers with only 2 athletes making an early break.

I exited the swim in 13th position in my age group and headed into transition 1 holding on to the leaders heading out on to the 20km bike course.

Surprisingly the conditions on the bike were good with Dorney Lake being renowned for its difficult windy conditions and I felt strong throughout the opening 2 laps, picking off 3 places.

The last 2 laps of the bike were slightly more difficult and my chest was starting to loosen off and causing me to cough and I eventually finished the 20km course in 00:34:38, 4 minutes slower than my 20km PB and in 7th position.

The run was the most difficult part of the race, the temperature had risen considerably and my chest was really starting to cause me problems and my lungs just weren’t there.

I finished the 2 x 2.5km laps in 00:19:40, a long way down on my usual 5km run pace but making up another 2 positions and finishing the race in 5th place in my age group.

My overall finishing position of the 538 starters and 451 finishers competing throughout the day was 25th so a very positive result and something to build on for the build up to Blenheim Palace.

Next Race – 6th June
